I’ll keep it short—spare you some of the gruesome details.
Hi! My name is Kaela Morin, and I’m a freelance writer and editor.
I came by it honestly. I’ve been an avid reader since I was very young. When we went to the city, I went to Coles instead of Claires, Chapters instead of Forever21. I brought three books and a magazine on a twenty minute car trip. I bartered and begged over each Scholastic book order. I was that kid. And I continued to be that kid through high school, more or less, and when high school was over I went to the University of Western Ontario to learn and meet other kids like me. Eventually, I graduated in 2018 with an Honours in English Language and Literature, a Minor in Writing Studies, and a Certificate in Communications with distinction.
I moved back to my small hometown and worked at the local newspaper as a reporter and receptionist. And I really liked it. For six months, I covered local events, answered phones, conducted interviews, and filed invoices. I flipped out to see my name and my words in print. Even my photography started to get better. But the place shut down seven months into my employment, and I was back to square one.
But I knew I loved writing. I knew that I wanted to involve it in my career, if not make it entirely my career.
And then I thought. What the hell. I’ll start a freelance writing website and blog.
What You’ll Find on this Blog
I’ll be posting once a week about a topic in one of my niches. And, because I’m a book- and cultural studies-nerd, a book review or essay, once in a while.
Health and Wellness
If I didn’t love reading and writing so hard, I think would be in the health field, in alternative medicine. And I blame ‘the health book’. It was this large, paperback textbook, called “Prescription for Nutritional Healing”, written by James and Phyllis Bach. It was so well-loved the cover was falling off and when I was bored, I would pull it off the shelf and marvel at the ways the body could be helped to heal itself.
This small habit has turned into a life-long interest, one that I pursue daily. I like to stay on top of new topics and studies in the industry that focus on diet, fitness, alternative and natural medicine and therapy, and mental health.
Travel and Adventure
Confession time. I love walking around in a new city. It’s the novelty and the curiosity, the new sights and new restaurants. I love getting cozy and really soaking it in. Whenever I get a chance, I’m either in Alberta or southern Ontario, visiting family and seeing the sights.
And when I’m not out of town, I’m adding something else to my list of preferred outdoor activities: camping, biking, fishing, four-wheeling, mudding, paddleboarding. And just this winter? Two sleds. Who needs the city when there’s so much adventure out there?
Personal Finance
I’m a millennial. And I’ve been a university student. So I know all about having to juggle, budget, thrift, and spend. I also know about not knowing how to juggle, budget, thrift, and spend. (Well, maybe the spend part.) I’ve made a few mistakes, and I’ve paid for them.
But more than saving receipts or writing down every penny you spend. How you feel about money affects the way you use it. And anyone who’s blown through their hard-earned cash on an impulse buy will know what I’m talking about.
Conclusion
Pursuing a new career is a great topic on its own, and I’ll be writing my way through the ups and downs I find freelancing. I am also open to new ideas and topics to write about, both inside and outside my niches.
Anyone else out there just getting up and going after what they want?
